God doesn’t inflict pain on us

I can’t exactly remember the specifics of the context but we discussing some recent catastrophe that had happened somewhere, some time. So upon looking at the hurt, pain, destruction caused by the event, my mother cried out “Why, God why? Why do you inflict harm on people?” (not that I want this to sound dramatic but its what she said or something to that effect).

My younger sister promptly replied “No mum, God doesn’t inflict pain on us.” And I stared at her in disbelief. Disbelief because I didn’t completely believe what she said. I mean, if you looked at the carnage, the blood, the heap of bodies, the overturned cars you couldn’t confidently say what she said. Hell, I didn’t!

Yet, all that she said made perfect sense. Why would He want to cause us suffering? If we call ourselves His children, why would He want to hurt us? Would your father want to hurt you? Of course not! For a minute, I was thinking like everyone else in the world. But Priya, what you said, although it shocked me for a split second, was right and so true. Thank you for the reminder.
